Module Title : Researching Sustainability
Assessment 1 : 15 minute Presentation
You are required to deliver a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 5-minutes Q&A session with your tutor, which counts for 20% of your final grade. This presentation assesses your ability to understand a research study written around an area of sustainability. You have been commissioned to establish a project which investigates a company or organisation’s approach to sustainable development, with a focus on the three interconnected pillars of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social.
Choose one of the following organisations as the focus of your project:
- Alter Eco: a certified B Corp, chocolate-focused food company using fair trade, organic, and regenerative agriculture.
- The North Face: an outdoor apparel and equipment brand
- Accor (global hotel group): multinational hospitality company and the world’s leading hotel group.
Structure your presentation as follow:
- Defines your specific research questions. These should focus on aspects of sustainable development within your chosen organisation, such as environmental practices, economic resilience, social responsibility, or an integrated approach combining these pillars.
- Argue for your research focus by demonstrating how your study aligns with and builds upon the definitions and conceptual understandings of sustainable development described in the academic literature.
- Explain how you would investigate your research questions to establish how sustainable development is understood, implemented, and experienced within your chosen organisation. Detail the research methods or data collection strategies you would use (interviews, surveys, document analysis, field observations) to capture evidence across the environmental, economic, and social dimensions
Assessment 2 : Coursework Reflection
You are required to write a 1,000-word reflective piece, which counts for 20% of your final grade. Your response should be clear, concise, and demonstrate critical engagement with the study you review.
