Task Specific Guidance

Themes for this Assignment

Please select two out of four themes below for your essay on the companies with international operations. You must critically evaluate relevant theories for each theme and apply them to the practice of the chosen companies (no more than one focal case company for each theme).

Theme 1: Theme in the analysis: Internationalisation path

An assessment of the internationalisation path of the company: Did it internationalise quickly or gradually? Explain why the company follows a certain pattern of internationalisation. Can the Uppsala or stages model explain the company’s path of internationalisation? If not, why? Analyse an example from the company of your choice. You can select a particular stage of the company, not the whole history of internationalisation, since many companies have a very long history of internationalisation.

Theme 2: Theme in the analysis: Locations of operations

An assessment of the locations the company is operating in: Are some markets particularly crucial for the company? Why is the company choosing particular locations for its operations? How does location choice contribute to the company’s corporate strategy? You can select one or more than one typical foreign markets to analyse in-depth and illustrate your points. You do not need to analyse all the markets in which the company operates.

Theme 3: Theme in the analysis: Corporate strategies

An overall critical evaluation of the strategies used by the company. Which strategies have been particularly successful? Which ones are proving to be a liability? Does the business environment influence the choice of strategy? What can the company do differently? You can analyse and take a specific example of a particular corporate strategy that the company has done well or not so well.

Theme 4: Theme in the analysis: Market entry package

An assessment of the main foreign market entry mode(s) employed by the company. What entry modes and why does the company use, certain foreign market entry modes? Does the company use more than one entry mode in certain markets? If so, why? You can analyse and select a foreign market entry mode (e.g. indirect exporting, licensing, franchising, direct exporting, joint venture, a wholly owned subsidiary, etc.) that the company has utilised to enter a foreign market.

The essay should meet the following expectations:

  • core knowledge requirements that must be demonstrated to obtain a pass in the module (appropriate to Level 7): an understanding of the relevant underpinning theories and the critical application to practice
  • the support/evidence appropriate to completion of the task (for example, textbooks, journal articles, market data, earlier analytical work): the report should demonstrate a broad reading, to demonstrate students’ understanding of the analysis. The readings should include academic articles and industrial data (i.e. the company’s website, the company’s reports, the industry’s reports)
  • core intellectual/cognitive skills which are expected (appropriate to Level 7): original and incisive analysis of the themes, insightful and outstanding research skills
  • expectations of writing style, structure, and presentation (e.g. essay, report, case notes, reflection, case analysis): clear arguments, proof that you understand the question, having a clear structure and organisation, containing relevant information to support your argument, using consistent and accurate referencing, conforming to academic style and is easy to read, professional presentation, being grammatically correct and having proofread for any errors

It is advised that you plan your work as early as possible and seek support from the tutors and the learning support team to achieve your best results.

You need to choose your case company(s) based on the following instructions:

Your case study should also be based on thorough and detailed empirical research of firms with a clear focus on international business strategy.

Your sources of information about the firms and their foreign investment can include the following:

  • Organisation’s website and press releases, annual reports, CSR/sustainability reports, organisational structure charts, mission statements, etc., are available on it.
  • Reputable newspapers and magazines.
  • Books written about the organisation.
  • Government and international organisation websites – e.g. OECD, UNCTAD (The World Investment Report in particular), WTO, WHO, relevant NGO websites, etc.

Your sources must be trustworthy and reputable (avoid tabloids, ‘yellow press’, consulting company websites and papers written by other students).

It is not appropriate to use Wikipedia as a source at your level of study. If you find yourself reading Wikipedia articles, please go to the reference list and the end and explore the sources instead.

Application of International Business theory:

  • Every argument you make in your case study must be grounded in one of the theoretical perspectives we discussed in class. You do not need to use all the perspectives we covered. Instead, you should select perspectives most helpful in the context of your case study.
  • Your use of theory should be critical, demonstrate wider academic reading and show an in-depth understanding of how different perspectives are linked.
  • Your use of theory must be based on thorough research on relevant and contemporary International Business literature.

BMS0079 Assessment Marking Criteria

These criteria are intended to help you understand how your work will be assessed. They describe different levels of performance of a given criterion.

Criteria are not weighted equally, and the marking process involves academic judgement and interpretation within the marking criteria.

The grades between Pass and Merit should be considered as different levels of performance within the normal bounds of the module. The higher-level categories allow for students who, in addition to fulfilling the basic requirement, perform at a superior level beyond the normal boundaries of the module and demonstrate intellectual creativity, originality and innovation.
