What knowledge and/or skills will I develop by undertaking the assessment?

This module will enable students to explore features of the contemporary hospitality industry and critically analyse the competitive environment in which the global hospitality business operates, to make informed decisions relating to its development and sustainability. This assessment is to examine the relationship between a set and series of data on a current industry trend. Success is measured by establishing the trend, acquiring all necessary data and analysing them by applying the relevant statistical concept, present the findings and transparently establishing the path to the final outcome of your analysis.

On successful completion of the assessment students will be able to achieve the following Learning Outcomes:

  1. Critically analyse current trends and events in the hospitality sector.
  2. Evaluate industry responses to social, economic, political and technological developments.
  3. Perform statistical calculations and interpret the result with a thorough knowledge of the foundation metrics, definitions, formulas and methodologies used in the hotel industry.
  4. Analyse performance reports and test against hotel benchmarking.

What is expected of me in this assessment?

Task(s) – Content

1. Explore how embracing trends affect a company’s performance (occupancy, RevPAR, or profit) in relation to a select group of competitors.

2. Identify and review existing research and literature to support the proposed relationship appropriately.

3. Define successful business performance and choose the correct methods to test the impact of on business performance.

4. Evaluation the positive and negative implications for the business and interpret the results considering their limitations.

Students are to clearly indicate which part of the assignment they were producing by stating the student name next to the Section Titles and Section Sub Titles.

  • The written reports must be completed using Microsoft Word only.

A grade will be provided for each criterion on the feedback grid which is specific to the assessment. The overall grade for the assessment will be calculated using the algorithm below.
