Assignment Description
There are four essential steps that are necessary for students to produce a comprehensive assessment of the contemporary crime scenario. Students will be required to apply criminological theories to develop a well-reasoned analysis.
Students are presented with a hypothetical yet realistic crime scenario reflecting issues such as gang violence, human trafficking, white-collar crime, domestic violence, or cybercrime. Each scenario is designed to highlight the complex interplay of social, economic, cultural, and legal factors that contribute to criminal activity.
Students are expected to select one scenario and formulate a research-based response to an accompanying question. The response should demonstrate the ability to:
-
Identify and apply relevant criminological theories to explain the causes and dynamics of the crime
-
Critically assess the role of individual, community, and structural factors in shaping criminal behavior
-
Evaluate state, regional, and international strategies used to address the specific crime, considering both punitive and preventative approaches
-
Propose evidence-based, practical, and contextually appropriate recommendations for addressing the crime
The assignment encourages students to move beyond description and engage in critical analysis. Submissions should be grounded in academic research, drawing on scholarly literature, legislation, policy reports, and empirical evidence where applicable. The goal is to strengthen students’ ability to connect theory with practice, assess the effectiveness of crime-control measures, and develop informed perspectives on complex criminological issues.
This assignment will be assessed on clarity of argument, depth of analysis, integration of theory and evidence, and the originality and feasibility of proposed solutions.
