Scenario A

  • A 45-year-old Ula is a mother of a disabled 15-year-old daughter, Ana, who suffers fromsevere cerebral palsy. Ana is wheelchair-bound, fed through a tube in her stomach andstill wears nappies. She needs constant care. She cannot communicate well in wordsbut uses non-verbal communication to indicate her needs. Recently, Ula asked the nurse togive Ana a hysterectomy, stating that this will prevent Alia from menstruating. She feels that menstruation will make Alia more uncomfortable and would affect her dignity. Ulaalso believes that Ana would not marry and have a child in future.

Scenario B

  • Temitope is a 40-year-old woman, living in sub-urban area with her husband, Chinedu. This is the second marriage for both of them, and now they have been together for 6years and have no children. Both of the couple are working and having good careers, positions and incomes. One day, Temitope received a phone call saying that hishusband had a minor accident at work and needs to come to A&E. As part of theroutine tests done in A&E, an incidental finding revealed that Chinedu is positive forHIV. One of the nurses attending to Chinedu is a family friend and knows the result. Chinedu knew that the infection could be from the several sexual relationships he hadwith a couple of people, including males in the past. After a week from the accident, Temitope happily informed Chinedu that she is 8 weeks pregnant.
