Op-Amp Lab Assignment: Inverting, Non-Inverting and Multistage Amplifiers – Calculation and Simulation

Programme Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Honours)
Topic Operational amplifier circuits (741 op amp)
Tasks Task 1 – Calculation; Task 2 – Simulation
Circuits Inverting, non-inverting and multistage op-amp amplifiers

This electronics lab assignment uses three 741 op-amp circuits to test whether students can predict output voltage from circuit theory and then confirm the result, with waveforms, in simulation software.

Background

Figure 1 shows a typical op amp: (a) the 8-pin configuration (offset null/balance, inverting input, non-inverting input, V−, output, V+, no connection) and (b) the circuit symbol.

Experiment Procedure – Circuits

  • Circuit 1 – Inverting Op Amp (Figure 2): a 741 op amp with ±12 V supplies, an input resistor R1 and feedback resistor R2 (10 kΩ), driven by a 1 Vpk, 10 kHz sine source, with an oscilloscope on input and output.
  • Circuit 2 – Non-Inverting Op Amp (Figure 3): the same supplies and 1 Vpk, 10 kHz source applied to the non-inverting input, with 10 kΩ resistors setting the gain.
  • Circuit 3 – Multistage Op Amp (Figure 4): several 741 stages with ±12 V supplies and 1 Vpk, 10 kHz sources, using resistors in the 2 kΩ–15 kΩ range as shown in the circuit diagram.

Tasks

  1. Task 1 – Calculation: Using a related circuit theorem, calculate the output voltage of each circuit. Show the calculation in the results section and sketch the input and output waveforms.
  2. Task 2 – Simulation: Use related simulation software to simulate the circuits. Place your schematic design, a screenshot of the output voltage measurement and the input and output waveforms in the results section.

Op-amp lab reports lose marks when the gain formulas are quoted without showing the virtual-short assumption, when the inverting stage’s 180° phase shift is missing from the sketched waveforms, or when multistage gains are not multiplied stage by stage before comparing with the simulated peak values. A short table of calculated versus simulated output, with a sentence on any difference, makes the results section much stronger.
