Assessment Criteria

To support this assessment, class learning activities will cover teamwork theories with group tasks exploring current practical collaborative methods and building social capital.

The final summative assessment requires students to research the best approach to take when implementing a group project. Using this information, a 1500-word report will be produced which provides a formal and appropriately referenced literature review to present research findings.

Group work and collaborative practice is a broad field, so you should select a specific topic of interest within this area for your report. Here are some questions to help you narrow your focus:

  1. Why is teamwork/collaboration important in academic and work environments?
  2. What theories discuss teamwork/collaboration?
  3. What are the current methods for team working?
  4. How can software/apps support collaboration?
  5. What are common issues encountered when working in a team?

These questions are intended as starting points; you do not need to address all of them. Choose one area that interests with you to guide your choice of a focused topic.

There will be an opportunity to research and write you report within the class sessions in the in the ‘Writers Workshops’ in week 7 & 8 with Tutor Support.

Use of AI in this Assessment

Generative AI is permitted at Solent University under specific conditions and must continue to follow the university’s rules around Academic Misconduct and the AI and Academic Integrity policy. In this assessment, you are allowed to use AI for the following tasks:

  • Where you use generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, these should only be used to improve readability and language of the work and not to replace key tasks such as coming up with a topic/project idea, doing you own research, making up results and conclusions.
  • Using AI should be done with your own human oversight and control and all work should be reviewed and edited carefully, because AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased.
  • AI for Research: Students are encouraged to use AI to help identify key topics, suggest reading materials, or generate research questions. Ethical Use of AI:

  • AI tools should be used as assistants, not as a replacement for independent research and critical thinking.
  • Students must clearly document where and how AI tools were used in the research or writing process (e.g., indicating when ChatGPT provided a summary or suggested a research source).
  • Failure to appropriately attribute AI usage or submitting AI-generated content without verification will be considered academic misconduct.

Late Submissions

You are reminded that:

i. If this assessment is submitted late i.e. within 7 calendar days of the submission deadline, the mark will be capped at 40% if a pass mark is achieved;

ii. If this assessment is submitted later than 7 calendar days after the submission deadline, the work will be regarded as a non-submission and will be awarded a zero;

iii. If this assessment is being submitted as a referred piece of work, then it must be submitted by the deadline date; any Refer assessment submitted late will be regarded as a non-submission and will be awarded a zero.

Extenuating Circumstances

The University’s Extenuating Circumstances (EC) procedure is in place if there are genuine short term exceptional circumstances that may prevent you submitting an assessment. You are able to self-certify for up to two assessment dates in any semester without supporting evidence for an extension of up to seven calendar days for coursework or to defer an exam to the resit period.

Alternatively, if you are not ‘fit to study’ (or you have used up your two self-certification opportunities), you can request:

  • an extension to the submission deadline of 7 calendar days, or
  • a request to submit the assessment at the next opportunity, i.e. the resit period (as a Defer without capping of the grade).

In both instances you must submit an EC application with relevant evidence.   If accepted under the university regulations there will be no academic penalty for late submission or non-submission dependent on what is requested.  You are reminded that EC covers only short-term issues (20 working days) and that if you experience longer term matters that impact on your learning then you must contact the Student Hub for advice.
