Tableau Final Project Instructions

Purpose:

The purpose of the final project is for you to visually showcase data you have selected earlier in this course, by identifying appropriate sources of data, cleaning the data, and presenting those data in different formats.

As you complete this task, you will:

  • Create dashboards with multiple visualization formats that tell a story using the storyboard feature of Tableau — you must use Tableau to create visualizations.

  • Use your data to effectively tell a story in Tableau.

In addition to creating visualizations, you’ll also submit a report in Word and a verbal presentation to explain how you chose to present your data and why your methods are appropriate.

You should use Tableau to create all your graphic representations (e.g., scatter plots, bubble charts, density plots, histograms, matrices, heat maps, parallel coordinate plots, multidimensional scaling, etc.).

In your report, explain your analysis and results providing:

  • Links to your public Tableau and screenshots of your Tableau results.

  • If you do not provide a link to your public Tableau site, then attach your TWBX Tableau file or put it on a cloud server and provide a link.

You should build a dashboard to show an overview of your major graphs on several pages in Tableau. Thus, you are telling a story and answering the question regarding your KPIs with this report and presentation.

In Conclusion: Required Artifacts

  1. Dashboard and graphical representations of each data set, as created in Tableau

    • Provide your public Tableau link and copies of the images in your summary report.

    • Provide TWBS file if you do not post your public Tableau links.

    • If TWBX is too large to attach, then provide a link to it in your cloud account such as Dropbox.

    • Produce a StoryBoard for your project.

  2. Written report of your data and discussion of your results (.doc, .docx, or .pdf)

    • Description of your data sources

    • How you joined tables (show picture of the join in Tableau)

    • KPIs, trends, why you selected certain types of graphs with images in report

    • Calculations

    • Conclusions of the analysis and recommendations for future analysis

    • Acknowledge sources using in-text citations and references for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized

Will probably take at least 10 pages.

Grading Rubric

  • 100/100 – Student clearly describes the process of collecting and cleaning the data and joining the tables.

  • 100/100 – Student clearly explains the use of the KPIs in developing the dashboards with example in the report and use of calculations.

  • 105/105 – Student develops a clear Storyboard and Report to describe what was accomplished with the Dashboards and the calculation or other techniques used in the Dashboards (providing examples from Tableau of each Dashboard).

  • 100/100 – Student prepares a Video presentation sharing the screen to demonstrate the dashboards in the Storyboard in Tableau and discuss how they were developed and the conclusions reached.

Show the calculations you used to produce your reports where the visuals produced are not just a set of bar charts but use trend lines and subgroups to show patterns in the data analysis. This is put in a storyboard format to build to final dashboards and conclusions. The dashboard should be clickable and meaningful.

There is no required length, but these reports run long — it is encouraged to use the snipping tool to show calculations and visualizations that you are discussing as you write your report.

  • Provide a link to your public Tableau site with the storyboard and the TWBX file — store the TWBX file on a cloud service and provide the link.

  • Put your video on a cloud service such as Dropbox or OneDrive and provide the link.
