Course learning objectives (CLo Outcomes)
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Discuss the roles undertaken by accountants with respect to information systems;
- Explain the purpose, assumptions, functions and implications of accounting systems within organisations (including the impact of web-based technologies on accounting information systems);
- Explain the acquisition, documentation and management of accounting data;
- Recognise the risks associated with accounting systems and the control practices required to mitigate those risks; and
- Discuss the project methodology employed to develop, implement and maintain an accounting information system.

Case study:
Jodie previously worked for a Chartered Accounting firm in the tax area. She has just joinedan internationally renowned employment agency, specifically recruiting accounting staff forcorporates and the public sector. Jodie is responsible for advertising staff positions. Inaddition, she is expected to use her many contacts to find suitable candidates for theadvertised jobs.
Recently at a party she caught up with Ken who works at her old firm. She says “Ken, youshould apply for the job I am advertising at the Defence Force. Blane has already applied, butI don’t think he will pass the security test – you know he has a conviction from thatunfortunate petty theft incident last year”.
Ken wasn’t quite so sure, but he also wanted something from Jodie – he is the treasurer of thelocal childcare organisation and wonders if she could do the audit of the annual accounts forhim. “It’s not a hard job and we’ll give you vouchers for a meal out at Logan Brown – youwon’t need to declare it for tax!
