Description of assessment task

You are given 3 questions to answer and 1 labwork to perform.

In the labwork, you will investigate the power-factor correction of a single-phase induction motor. You will then perform calculations to verify your measurements and discuss applications. You should present your work in a readable form including calculations, written explanations, simulations, annotated diagrams and illustrations as appropriate.

Marking Criteria for Assessment

Questions 1-3 are each worth 20, 25 and 5 marks respectively.

The labwork is worth 50 marks.

Please note that all work is assessed according to the University of  Lincoln Management of Assessment Policy and that marks awarded  are provisional on Examination Board decisions which take place at the end of the Academic Year.

Coursework Questions

Question 1

Steam turbine driven synchronous generators are still commonly used in power generation, despite the decommissioning of coal fired power stations, for example from geothermal, nuclear and waste incineration sources. Describe in 1000 words with the aid of illustrations the operation of a large steam turbine system. Refer to the essential components, thermodynamic processes, efficiency and environmental issues.

Question 2

The network in Fig.1 represents an existing primary substation with two parallel transformers and a new connection to a solar farm with an open circuit breaker. The existing 11 kV switchgear is rated to a fault level of 250 MVA. Assume all impedances are reactive (X»R) for simplicity and use a base value of 10 MVA.

a. Determine:

i. the fault level on the 11 kV busbars in the existing system, [5 marks]

ii. the new fault level when the circuit breaker is closed. [5 marks]

iii.the placement and value of a reactor to reduce the new fault level to within the switchgear rating explaining your reasoning, and [5 marks]

iv. the current each transformer provides in the event of a fault on the 11 kV busbars with the reactor inserted and the solar farm online. [5 marks]

b. Given that T3 is a star-delta step-up transformer, draw the circuit and determine the line and phase voltages and currents associated with both sides of the transformer under full-load conditions.  [5 marks]
