Module Learning Outcomes
- Discuss ways in which advanced techniques (alone or in combination) can be used to solve real industrial problems
- Apply the analytical process to solving a range of non-routine analytical problems
- Make a presentation to the class and engage in professional exchange of views with peers and tutors while defending the recommendations made in the individual report
- To evaluate personal performance, justify the choice of solution or strategy, and demonstrate innovation in the critical comparison of alternative approaches for solving the problem
Assignment Brief and Assessment Criteria
Each practical report will have a 10% weighting and a maximum word count of <800 words. Each report will be marked with a total of 20 marks.
- The reports should NOT contain an introduction to the practical (e.g. theory, principles or methodology).
- The reports should have the data obtained, any calculated results from the practical and answers to the discussion questions section.
The Data, Results and Discussion sections should include: chemical reactions (if any), relevant equations (if any), calculations, the results obtained, schemes, data, observations, comments and discussions where scientific literature can be cited. Scanned experimental data, such as chromatograms or spectra, will need to be uploaded to Canvas.
Assessment Criteria
(There may be some variation in marking if it is not possible to carry out certain parts of the experiment.)
1: For your report, you must include both images (annotated appropriately) detailing the 7.5% and 15% Coomassie-stained acrylamide gels. (8 marks)
Marks for correct annotations.
2: Discuss why cellular proteins in the cellular lysate can migrate in an electric field. (4 marks)
Marks for correct discussion of migration.
3: Discuss why the separation profile of stained cellular proteins in the 2 gels appears different. (4 marks)
Marks for explaining why they are different.
4: Discuss the variety of applications that SDS-PAGE may address in medical research laboratories. (4 marks)
